Polis- fundamental political unit Acropolis- meeting spot Monarchy- king ruler Aristocracy- small group of nobles ruling together Oligarchy- ruled by a few powerful people Tyrant- One person who took power usually liked back then unlike today Democracy- ruled by the people Helot- peasants forced to be slaves Phalanx- side by side formation used in wars with spears Persian Wars- wars between the Greek and the Persian Empires Adopted many forms of government meeting places in the towns tyrants Athens created a Democracy Draco took power and created legal code Allowed laws to be submitted Wealthy sons went to school They learned reading, grammar, poetry, history, math, and music Girls didn't attend school
